How to compress a PDF to 500 KB or 1 MB
To compress a PDF to 500 KB or 1 MB, open Compress PDF to 500 KB or Compress PDF to 1 MB, add your file and press Compress file. The size limit is already selected for you, so there is nothing to set.
Below are the steps, which limit to pick, and what to do when a big scan just will not fit.
| Your limit | Tool to open | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Under 500 KB | Compress PDF to 500 KB | Certificates, experience letters, income or caste proofs with a few pages |
| Under 1 MB | Compress PDF to 1 MB | Longer documents, portal uploads, email attachments |
| Any other size | Compress PDF | Pick your own target size or level |
Compress a PDF to 500 KB or 1 MB in four steps
- Open the tool that matches the limit written on your form.
- Choose your PDF or drop it on the page. Files up to 25 MB work.
- Press Compress file. Luvkaam tries different settings one by one and keeps the clearest version that fits under your limit.
- Download the new file. Open it and zoom in before you upload it anywhere.
All of this happens in your own browser. Your PDF is not sent to Luvkaam, which matters when the file is your marksheet, Aadhaar or bank statement.
Which limit should you pick?
Always go by the number the form or the office gives you. If the form says "maximum 500 KB", do not send a 900 KB file and hope for the best. Most portals simply reject it.
If you are free to choose, for example when you are sending a file by email, 1 MB is the safer pick. It leaves more room for each page, so small print and stamps stay sharp. Pick 500 KB when the form asks for it, or when you need to attach many files to one email.
Need something smaller still? There are tools for 200 KB and 100 KB too, and our guide on compressing a PDF to 100 KB or 200 KB covers those.
Will the text stay selectable?
Sometimes. The tool first tries a light clean-up that keeps the text as real text, so you can still select, search and copy it. If that is enough to get under your limit, you get a file that looks exactly like the original.
If it is not enough, the tool turns each page into a picture to save space. The page still looks clear on screen, but you can no longer select the words. For an upload or an email this is usually fine. If you will need to copy text later, keep your original file as well.
If your PDF still will not fit
A 40-page colour scan may never fit under 500 KB and still be readable. When that happens, the fix is to make the file lighter before you compress it, not to squeeze harder.
- Take out pages you do not need. Blank pages, the back side of a single-sided form, or extra copies all add weight. Remove them with Split PDF, then compress what is left.
- Scan again in black and white. If the form allows it, a black-and-white scan is many times smaller than a colour one of the same page.
- Split one big file into two. Some portals let you upload a document in parts. Check the form first.
- Shrink the photos first. If you made the PDF from phone photos, make the photos smaller and build the PDF again with JPG to PDF.
Check before you upload
Open the compressed file and zoom in on the parts that matter: your name, roll number, dates, marks, signature and the seal. If you can read all of them easily, you are done. If they look blurred, try the 1 MB tool instead, or remove a few pages so each page gets more room.
One more habit that saves trouble: keep your big original in a safe folder and make a new small copy from it each time. Compressing a file that was already compressed makes it worse every time.

FAQ
Is it free to compress a PDF to 500 KB on Luvkaam?
Yes. It is free and you do not need to sign up.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The file is made smaller inside your browser on your own phone or computer.
Can I compress a PDF to 1 MB on my phone?
Yes. The tool works in the phone browser. Very long files can take a little longer on an older phone, so keep the page open until the download button shows.
Why does my compressed PDF look a bit softer?
