How to split a PDF and pull out the pages you need
You have a 40-page PDF and need pages 5 to 8. Or a scanned file with one page too many. Or each page must go to a different person. All of that is splitting.
Steps
- Open Split PDF.
- Choose your PDF.
- Pick what you want under Split by (see below).
- Type the pages if the mode needs them.
- Press Split file and download.
The three modes
Ranges (one file each). Each range you type becomes its own PDF. Typing 1-3, 4-6 gives you two files. If there is more than one file, you get them together in one zip.
Extract pages into one file. The pages you type are collected into a single new PDF. This is the one to use for "I only need pages 5 to 8".
Every page. Each page becomes its own PDF. Good for forms where every page goes somewhere different.
How to type the pages
- 1-3 means pages 1, 2 and 3.
- 5 means only page 5.
- 1-3, 5, 8- means pages 1 to 3, then page 5, then page 8 to the end. A dash with nothing after it means "to the last page".
Use commas between the parts. If you type a page that does not exist, you will see a message.
Removing pages you do not want
There is no "delete page" button. Do it the other way round: use Extract pages and type every page you want to keep. To drop page 4 of a 10-page file, type 1-3, 5-10.
Putting parts back together
Use Merge PDF to join the parts again, in any order. This is also how you move a page: split it out, then merge the pieces in the new order.
Good to know
- The original file is never changed. You always get new files.
- Splitting happens on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
- A PDF with a password has to be opened with Unlock PDF first.
- Very long scans can be cut into parts before reading them with OCR scanned PDF, which reads 20 pages at a time.
